Madhavan gets Rs.10 mn for small part in Jaya-starrer
R. Madhavan, who had opted out of Revathy Varma's film 'Aap Ke Liye Hum', is back after he has been paid a whopping Rs.1 crore (Rs.10 million) for a small part in the women-centric film that has Jaya Bachchan, Ayesha Takia and Raveena Tandon in lead roles.
'But what to do? It's very difficult to get male stars for female-oriented films. We've paid Maddy Rs.1 crore out of which he has already received Rs.25 lakh. He has already shot for five days with us,' Varma told IANS.
The film was earlier titled 'Chaassni', but Jaya wasn't too happy with the title. 'We called the film 'Chaassni'. But Jayaji put her foot down, said the title was too sweet. So we've a new title 'Aap Ke Liye Hum',' said Varma
The director had launched her women-centric film on Jaya's birthday in April but family matters kept the senior actress away from her rare film assignment. The senior started shooting for the film Saturday. 'It would have started two days earlier. But my cast got busy with Ganesh Chaturthi,' said Varma.
Ayesha, who for a while seemed unsure if after her marriage, honeymoon and other related activities she would be able to do the film when two schedules had to be cancelled, is back and will be seen as Jaya's daughter in the film.
Varma says she was insistent on having Ayesha. 'I couldn't imagine anyone else doing that role. If you remember Jyothika has done the part in the original (Tamil movie 'June R'). And Ayesha has the same childlike warmth and a nurturing quality to her personality. I couldn't think of anyone else,' she said.
'Aap Ke Liye Hum' is about an 'adopted' mother abandoned by her wretched son, played by Ranvir Shorey who was the last to join the cast.
But wasn't Genelia d'Souza the first choice? 'Yes, we did think of her. But Genelia is a very busy and a big star. It wasn't the money, we've paid all the actors their market price.'

I'm known for my sexy and glam image:Sophie Chowdry

The veejay is setting Bollywood on fire with her sexy moves in films like Pyaar Ke Side Effects, Kidnap, Aa Dekhen Zara and now, Daddy Cool. She has a guest appearance in this Friday's release Chintu-ji as well.
In a fun chat with Rediff readers on Thursday, Sophie spoke candidly about the events of her life. For those who missed the chat, here's what transpired:
prasoom asked, Hey sop... wats up??? So what is ur next project? R u gonna do any serious film?
Sophie Chowdry answers, Prasoom, how are you? Well I have a lovely film releasing called Chintu-ji. Mine is a guest appearance but it's a fabulous film and I hear the recent screening got a standing ovation! Please see it!
jish asked, hi sophie, what made you do 'daddy cool', was it your character or overall start cast?
Sophie Chowdry answers, It was the overall project -- nice starcast, great banner. I grew up watching Inder Kumar films and wanted to work with them. The script was funny and I felt my character Ayesha would stand out. I would get to play someone not just sexy but very cute and funny too. The response has been great for my work so I'm glad I did it.
hisophie asked, Hi Sophie, sometime ago, I saw a pic of you in a magazine. You were in a semi transparent top. Do you think it was a morphed image?
Sophie Chowdry answers, Hi there. I have seen so many morphed images of mine and its shocking and disgusting! I'm known for my sexy and glam image but one thing is for sure -- I carry myself with a lot of class and style and would never do anything vulgar or cheap. Maxim was super sexy but sensual and classy. That's why I did it. Thank you all for the compliments :)
ali asked, hey sophie..any planz cumin to australia
Sophie Chowdry answers, G'day mate! (oops, sorry but I grew up watching Neighbours and Home and Away!) Would love to go to Australia. Hopefully after the release of my new album in October!
Harley-Davidson to vroom on Indian roads in 2010

The iconic bike manufacturer has established a subsidiary in Gurgaon and has begun the process of seeking dealers. "The company's current approach is to import its motorcycles, accessories and riding gear, and it will continue to evaluate how best to evolve its approach to the market as Harley-Davidson's business in India grows," said the company's president and chief operating officer, Matthew LevatichThe company will focus its initial steps in India on growing the Harley-Davidson brand through a variety of consumer experiences and on establishing a local dealer network. The Harley-Davidson subsidiary in India will be led by managing director Anoop Prakash, who said the company has begun the process of identifying initial dealers in Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, Hyderabad and in Punjab'As a key next step, we are looking for local dealer partners who share our passion and commitment to building customer relationships, the Harley-Davidson brand and our business in India for the long term,' said Prakash'Given the rapid development of India's economy and physical infrastructure, this is exactly the right time to bring the world's greatest motorcycles to one of the world's largest motorcycling nations,' said Levatich. Wall Street bets on Google's next big business ideas

"Even though paid search is 95 percent of the business, I think everybody's looking for that next trick," said John Lutz, a senior research analyst at Frost Investment Advisors, which owns Google shares.
Google will brief investors in a Webcast on Wednesday about search and monetization, though Google spokeswoman Jane Penner said the event would focus more on the monetization of search than on businesses like YouTube.
The Internet giant has myriad initiatives, including a display ad business, mobile Internet products and YouTube, the world's top video Web site.
But none have demonstrated the kind of financial horsepower typically associated with Google, which generated nearly $22 billion in revenue last year.
The Mountain View, California, company has been tight-lipped when it comes to the financials of non-search businesses, though there are signs it is opening up a little.
In July, Google lifted the covers slightly on YouTube, revealing that YouTube is monetizing billions of video views every month and that it expects YouTube to become a profitable business in the not-too-distant future. Executives wanted to dispel reports that YouTube, which it acquired for $1.65 billion in 2006, does not have a credible business model.
New formats
Brigantine Advisors analyst Colin Gillis said new ad formats that incorporate videos and graphics could prove key to Google's future growth, as the company courts advertisers like Johnson & Johnson and Procter & Gamble.
"Google's got to give them a good format to convey emotion. This is going to be the next major area," said Gillis.
Google sought to bolster its display ad business with the 2008 acquisition of ad network DoubleClick for $3.1 billion. But rivals Yahoo Inc, Microsoft and Time Warner Inc's AOL still dominate that market.
Make YSR's son the successor, Andhra cabinet urges Sonia Gandhi
The Andhra Pradesh cabinet has written to Congress president Sonia Gandhi urging her to make late Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy's son Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy the next chief minister of the state.
In a letter addressed to Sonia Gandhi Friday, the council of ministers told her that the cabinet at its special meeting Thursday unanimously resolved to propose the candidature of Jaganmohan Reddy as the next chief minister.
'Keeping in view the developmental commitments and ongoing irrigation projects, besides the sentiments of the general public, we have unanimously resolved to propose the candidature of Jaganmohan Reddy as the chief minister of the state,' said the letter, copies of which were made available to media.
The letter carried the names of caretaker Chief Minister K. Rosaiah, who presided over the meeting, and all other 35 ministers.
'Just like Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, Mr. Jaganmohan Reddy has a good following among the masses from the grassroot level and is acceptable to all sections, particularly the downtrodden and weaker sections,' the letter reads.
'Mr. Jaganmohan Reddy is the only suitable candidate in the present circumstances.'

Sagarika Ghatge: Priority is not to do n number of films

Ask her about FOX and she says, "It's the script that worked for me. It is not your usual kind of action thriller. It has been handled very well and in a very different way. FOX is a well made thriller after a long long time. Once you see it you will understand."
Sure Sagarika, we will check it out and given the amount of curiosity the promos are creating, we are sure a lot of others will too

Anil slips on world power ranking, Mukesh out from world's 100 most powerful people
The Ambani brothers seem to be losing on their world ranking due to the prolonged sibling rivalry.
While Anil has slipped 30 places down in the list of the world's 100 most powerful people, Mukesh has made an exit from the list.
Ranked 97th in the latest edition of the annual ranking compiled by British fashion magazine Vanity Fair, Anil is the only Indian in the list, which is topped by financial services behemoth Goldman Sachs CEO Lloyd Blankfein.
Anil was ranked at 67th position jointly with Mukesh in the previous year's list.
The current list, described as 'The New Establishment 2009' by the magazine, also figures names like Apple's iconic chief Steve Jobs and legendary investor Warren Buffett and these 100 people have been described as the world's most powerful in today's information age.
"Ambani was the biggest loser when Forbes published its annual wealth ranking in March: his fortune fell by $32 billion, to $10 billion. But that still left him with plenty of cash to close a Bollywood-meets-Hollywood deal with Steven Spielberg to make a $500 million investment in DreamWorks (along with the rights to distribute its films in India)," Vanity Fair said about Anil.

I will attract more people to IPL: Salman Khan
All of a sudden Salman Khan is a part of Indian sport. He wants to buy a team in the Indian Premier League and he is the brand ambassador of Indian football. So what's prompting the Bollywood superstar to take this sporting journey? CNN-IBN put all the important questions to Salman Khan in a freewheeling chat.
CNN-IBN: You are the brand ambassador for Indian football and you are also interested in buying a IPL team. How does that work?
Salman Khan: Why not? I would have done the same if it was a swimming team or a cycling team. I just want to get into sports. I think if I can get people into the gym, I am sure I can bring people in the field as well.
CNN-IBN: How far has that progressed? I believe you had a good meeting with Lalit Modi.
Salman Khan: I just found out how that works. I came to know about the bidding system. And I will bid next year. If it works out and we get the bid, then we have the team; if not we will try again.
CNN-IBN: Are you going to be a sole owner or a co-owner?
Salman Khan: We have to work all those details out. I have not figured it out yet.
CNN-IBN: Any members of your family is going to be involved in it?
Salman Khan: My dad and Arbaaz (Khan) are both huge cricket fans. So may be.
CNN-IBN: What attracts so many actors from the Indian film industry to the Indian Premier League?
Salman Khan: I think Twenty20. It's got glamour to it, it has speed, it's got the zing.
CNN-IBN: What sort of role do you see for yourself. Will you be out there dancing or be the behind man support.
Salman Khan: I am just going to be in the stands. You are not allowed on the field unless you are playing.
CNN-IBN: If you are owning a team, you have to be involved in all aspects and that requires different skills from what you are used to.
Salman Khan: If I am jumping in the water, I have to learn how to swim; I will drown otherwise. So I am jumping in, may be while in mid air I will probably learn.

YS Jaganmohan in YSR's shadow
Y S Jaganmohan Reddy, 37, who is being pushed to succeed his father Y S Rajasekhara Reddy as Andhra Pradesh chief minister, is a media baron who runs popular the Telugu daily Sakshi and a television channel by the same name.
The state cabinet presided over by K Rosaiah, who was installed as caretaker chief minister Thursday, passed a resolution urging the Congress party's central leadership to let Jaganmohan take over the mantle of the state, though the high command is yet to decide on YSR's successor.
The decision also has a backing of some 100-odd legislators, who have even launched a campaign to put Jaganmohan in the saddle.
There is also an SMS doing the rounds, saying: "When Indira Gandhi expired Rajiv Gandhi was made the prime minister. Why not Jagan be made chief minister now?" The SMS is being circulated by Jaganmohan's supporters.
Jaganmohan Reddy, a first time MP from Kadapa Lok Sabha constituency, received his early education from Pulivendula--also the place of his birth-- and went on to get a Master's degree in business administration. While in college, he took active part in sports, excelled in cricket and won several shields at various inter-collegiate tournaments.
His supporters argue that by projecting Jaganmohan Reddy as a young entrepreneur and a philanthropist, they could counter the charisma of those cine stars who have either started new political outfits or have been actively campaigning for regional parties. Jaganmohan is married and has a school-going daughter.
Making Jaganmohan the chief minister would be a real tribute to the deceased leader, state Health Minister D Nagender said.
Born on December 21, 1972, Jaganmohan joined the Congress in his young years and was inspired by the late Rajiv Gandhi. He also has a website ysjaganreddy.com, that claims he is an industrialist who sets up factories in remote villages to create employment opportunities for the poor.
There is a groundswell of support for Jaganmohan. While many legislators met Union Minister for law and in-charge of party affairs in the state M. Veerappa Moily and submitted a memorandum to make him the chief minister, some even went to Praja Rajyam Party president K. Chiranjeevi to request him to support Jaganmohan Reddy's candidature.
A group of MPs held a meeting here and decided to place their demand before Congress president Sonia Gandhi.
Some party workers sitting outside Gandhi Bhavan, the party headquarters in the city, said they would not accept anybody other than YSR's son to head the state government.
YSR was killed in a chopper crash while travelling to Chittoor from Hyderabad in inclement weather Wednesday. The mangled remains of the helicopter and the bodies of the chief minister and four others accompanying him were located on Thursday morning in the Nallamala jungles.

Bigg Boss 3 to be hosted by Big B
Bollywood megastar Amitabh Bachchan will return to the small screen after a gap of four years to host the third season of Colors' popular reality show Bigg Boss, a well-placed source confirmed on Friday.
" Bigg Boss is set to get bigger. And Amitabh Bachchan is going to take over as host from Shilpa Shetty, who hosted it last season," the source told IANS.
The Indian version of the popular British reality show Big Brother, Bigg Boss will have celebrity contestants locked into a house under the surveillance of multiple cameras for a period of three months without any contact with the outside world.
Periodic eliminations will take place based on voting by housemates and the audiences.
The show is expected to go on air around December.
Big B, who had a super hit stint as the host of "Kaun Banega Crorepati" for two seasons, will be seen on the show on the days of the elimination.
The inaugural Bigg Boss show in 2006 had Arshad Warsi as the host.

67 die after YSR's(Andhra Chief minster) death
More than 60 people across Andhra Pradesh have died of shock or committed suicide after the death of their chief minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy, prompting his MP son Y S Jagannathan Reddy to appeal to his late father's admirers to be patient and brave.
"I appeal to all of you to be patient and be brave in this hour of tragedy. He (YSR) wanted to see a smile on the faces of all and if you resort to such things (suicide) this will hurt him," said Jaganmohan, trying to hard to control his tears.
"I request you not to commit suicide," said Jaganmohan, who was elected to Lok Sabha from Kadapa in recent elections and is being seen by many as the next chief minister.
The appeal before the camera was telecast on all Telugu television channels.
Telugu television channels estimated that 67 people died of shock on hearing the news of their leader's death in a horrific air crash Thursday or committed suicide, unable to bear the loss. Most of those who died of shock were watching news of YSR's death on television.
This is the first time in the state's history that such a large number of people have died over the death of any political leader.
YSR, as the late leader was popularly known, has surpassed in death the popularity of actor and Telugu Desam Party (TDP) founder N.T. Rama Rao who died in 1996.
A large number of those who died of shock included young supporters of YSR and the beneficiaries of the various welfare schemes launched by him in the last five years. They suffered a cardiac arrest following the news of the chief minister's death in the helicopter crash.
The deaths were reported from 19 out of 23 districts in the state. In the coastal district of West Godavari, six people died of shock and four committed suicide.
"YSR dedicated his life to people, I am dedicating my life to him," a youth wrote in his suicide note before consuming pesticide.
A physically handicapped couple, who were getting monthly pension under a welfare scheme, attempted suicide by jumping into the Godavari river but were saved by fishermen.
In Hyderabad, 42-year-old Yadgiri died of shock while watching news of YSR's death on television. M Srinivas, 30, suffered cardiac arrest.

Bitter truth: India drought may trigger world sugar crisis
India has enough grain stocks to ride out an expected poor harvest, but the failure of the monsoon adds to global uncertainty about food and grain stocks, the head of an agricultural think tank said on Wednesday.
India's monsoon rains have been 29 per cent below normal since the beginning of the June-September season, hurting crops such as rice and cane and triggering a sharp rise in food prices in India and sugar futures abroad.
For the time being, India has built up sufficient grains stocks, said Joachim von Braun, director general of the International Food Policy Research Institute, but warned that the uneven rainfall has raised concerns.
"If government food distribution systems and national markets operate well, there should not be any serious issue for increasing hunger," he said in Beijing.
"But it will draw down stocks and that will make the international market again more nervous. It is very difficult to rebuild stocks from the low levels we have."
IFPRI in April released a report that warned of a rush by wealthier nations afraid of food shortages to buy agricultural land, particularly in Africa.
It called for standards of transparency and ethics in the acquisitions, to avoid people being displaced from land or food being exported during a crisis.
The deal spree was triggered by a spike in agricultural prices in 2008, as high energy prices triggered greater interest in biofuel, that caused many countries, especially in Asia, to limit exports and build domestic reserves.
"It's systematic, it's there to stay, and it shouldn't surprise us. The undermining of trust in trade through the export bans of last year... has not been forgotten," he said.
"It was a huge failing of the world trading system."
IFPRI has tracked land deals and leases totalling 20 million to 25 million hectares, an area greater than France, von Braun estimated. Investors in overseas land include hedge funds, private entrepreneurs and state-backed corporations, as well as government-to-government deals.
Between one-third and one-half of the overseas land deals studied by IFPRI have been for the purpose of growing crops for biofuels, he said

May be seeing beginning of recession's end - Obama
President Barack Obama said on Thursday the actions taken by his administration have helped stop an economic freefall and the United States may be seeing the "very beginnings" of the end of the recession.
Obama, addressing a raucous campaign rally for the Democratic candidate for Virginia governor, offered a spirited defense of policies implemented in his first 200 days in office to combat the worst U.S. economic crisis in decades.
"I'm convinced that actions we've taken in the first six months have helped stop our economic freefall," he told a crowd in Tysons Corner, Virginia, outside of Washington.
"We're losing jobs at half the rate we were at the beginning of this year."
"Our financial system is no longer on the verge of collapse. The market is up. Housing prices are up for the first time in nearly three years. So we may just be seeing the very beginnings of the end of this recession," he added.
Obama acknowledged more work is needed on recovery efforts but struck back at Republican critics, reminding his audience he had inherited the economic crisis when he took office in January. It began under his Republican predecessor, George W. Bush.
"I don't want the folks who created the mess to do a lot of talking. I want them to get out of the way so we can clean up the mess," Obama said to loud cheers.
Many Republicans have accused Obama of making economic matters worse by trying to spend the country out of recession.
Obama spoke after a government report showed the number of U.S. workers submitting new claims for jobless benefits fell sharply last week, fanning hopes the fragile labor market was on the mend and the broader economy was stabilizing.
Earlier, top White House economic adviser Christina Romer cautioned, though, that economic recovery will be painful and Friday's widely watched report on July unemployment likely will show hundreds of thousands more jobs were lost.

Tunisian woman pregnant with 12 babies
Believe it or not, a Tunisian woman is said to be pregnant with 12 babies. The unnamed teacher and her husband are ecstatic about the pregnancy that was achieved with fertility treatment after she suffered two miscarriages -- the couple are expecting six boys and six girls, the media reported.
Her husband, who was named only as Marwan and is also a teacher of Arabic at a high school in their home town of Gafsa, southwest of the capital Tunis, said it was an "amazing and wonderful miracle". "In the beginning, we thought that my wife would give birth to twins, but more foetuses were discovered.
Our joy increased with the growing number," leading British newspaper ''The Daily Telegraph'' quoted him as telling the local media. In fact, the woman, who is thought to be as much as nine months'' pregnant, is about to eclipse the octuplets of the American mother Nadia Suleman.
Fertility experts have condemned the news, alleging the doctors who treated the couple are "irresponsible" and risking the health and lives of the mother and her babies. Simon Fisher, a fertility expert from the University of Oxford, said the news of the duodecaplets was "horrendous" and the doctors involved were "irresponsible" to allow it.
"Whatever the reasons behind this, the chances of there being a happy ending are pretty remote. The chances of all of them surviving are extremely remote and the chance of some of them surviving without any problems is unlikely -- they are likely to have significant problems," he said.

History of Indian Cricket

History of Indian cricket - Before 1930s
Zee Cric The game of cricket was introduced in India in the middle of the 18th century. On 3rd March 1845 the ‘Sporting Intelligence’ magazine carried a reasonably lengthy match report between ‘Sepoy’ cricketers and the European ones. The article clearly proved that Indian cricket was underway in a city called Sylhet, in modern day Bangladesh.Zee Cric An impressed reporter proudly stated “the most enthusiastic European Cricketers could not have played with more energy and cheerfulness than the Sepoys did”.
However, chroniclers of cricket unanimously suggest that the formation of ‘Parsi Oriental Cricket Club’ in Bombay in the year 1848 led to the start of organized cricket by the Indians.
Parsi cricket
The first Indians to take to the game were the Parsis of Bombay, an educated, well-to-do and progressive community. In 1848, the Parsi boys established the ‘Oriental Cricket Club’.
The emerging Parsi middle class supported cricket as a means of strengthening ties with the overlords, while intellectuals welcomed it as a renewal of physical energy for the race. Around thirty Parsi clubs were formed in the within two decades of the formation of the first club. They were named for British viceroys and statesmen and for Roman gods.
Hindu cricket
The Hindu’s took up the game of cricket with the primary reason that they did not want to fall behind the Parsis in any manner. The first Hindu club ‘Bombay Union’ was formed in 1866. Hindus started playing cricket due to social and business rivalry with the Parsis. Hindu cricketers sorted themselves on the lines of caste and region of origin.
One of the primary Hindu cricketer was Ramchandra Vishnu Navlekar. Some of the main clubs were Gowd Saraswat Cricket Club, Kshatriya Cricket Club, Gujrati Union Cricket Club, Maratha Cricket Club, Teluu Youn Cricketrs etc.
“There is no more agreeable sight to me,” remarked the Mayor of Bombay in 1886, “than of the whole Maidan overspread by a lot of enthusiastic Parsi and Hindu cricketers, keenly and eagerly engaged in this manly game.”
Gymkhanas
The all-white Bombay Gymkhana, which even refused admission to Ranji, was established in 1875. The Europeans invited the Parsis to paly with them for the first time in 1877. This more or less became a regular feature though it was a decade before the Parsis’ eventually managed to win. Beginning from 1886, the Hindus also began playing an annual match with the Europeans.
With the efforts of Luxmani and Tyebjee families, also famous for their social work such as establishing schools and good work at the law courts, the Muslims had also set up their own cricket club in 1883. This was known as the Muslim Cricket Club.
Cricket in India got a huge impetus by the formation of Parsi, Hindu and Muslim Gymkhanas in the 1890s. The British alloted one plot each to the three major religious communities in the city, for their exclusive use ending their conflict with the colonizers.
Ranjit Singhji
A notable mention in this era is the vital contribution of the Black Prince, Prince Ranjit Singhji who had moved to England to study at Cambridge University and was given a cricket “blue” in his final year by the college.
He then went on to play county cricket for Sussex. He made his Test debut for England in 1896. This made him the first Indian to play Test cricket.Zee Cric Ranjit Singhji was Wisden Cricketer of the Year in 1897. He scored a century in the second innings on his Test debut, making his only the second batsman for England to achieve this feat. Duing the year 1899 he amassed 2,780 runs during a season which was the highest aggregate ever made!
India’s most prestigious first-class cricket tournament – Ranji Trophy was named after him in order to honour this great cricketer.
The Bombay Quadrangular
It started as a contest between the Parsis and the Europeans and evolved thereafter. The Hindus joined in 1886. These matches came to be called the Presidency matches due to their ever-rising popularity. In 1907 a triangular tournament was started which involved the Parsis, Europeans and the Hindus.
It was in 1912 that the Muslims joined the league of the famous Bombay tournaments turning it into a Quadrangular. Neutral umpires were introduced for the first time in 1917. Uptil now, umpires were mainly appointed from the Bombay Gymkhana. However, all this changed and umpires began to be appointed from the non-competing teams.
In the 1920’s, the quadrangular tournament gained immense popularity. Players were being selected from all over the sub-continent region. This gave a huge boost to cricket in India and led to the start of several other tournaments all over the country.
In the year 1937, a new team called the Rests was also added to the already four teams turning it into a Pentangular tournament. However, in 1946 due to communal disturbances this Pentangular tournament was done away with, and a zonal competition came into existence.
The Nayudus from Nagpur
The Nayudu family spent thousands on the promotion of cricket. They formed a club in Nagpur that coached many underprivelaged boys and took care of their education provided they fulfilled the only condition, that is, to play cricket.Zee Cric Such was the family’s fascination with the sport that C K Nayudu’s birth was celebrated by his granddad by organising a cricket match.
The family’s contribution proved fruitful as C.K Nayudu, the family’s illustrious son, went on to become one of the finest batsmen that India has ever produced.
One of Nayudu’s most memorable innings was his 153 in Bombay in 1926. Coming in an hour and thirteen minutes against six English top line bowlers spoke volumes of the progress made by Indian cricket. CK Nayudu was Wisden’s Cricketer of the Year in 1933 and was also nicknamed as the ‘Hindu Bradman’.
Formation of BCCI
A.E.R Gilligan’s MCC (Marylebone Cricket Club) toured India in 1926 and took on Bombay in a match that proved to be a turning point in the history of Indian cricket. As C K Naidu smashed 153, with elevan sixes and thirteen fours, for the Hindus, India began dreaming big. It eventually led to the formation of BCCI in 1928. Records prove that the first meeting was held on 4 December 1928 and was funded by the Maharaja of Patiala.
The first President of the Board was RE Grant Govan and the founding Secretary was AS De Mello. De Mello later went on to become Board President and was also involved in the creation of the Cricket Club of India. He also helped in establishing Brabourne Stadium which was India’s first permanent cricket venue in 1937.Zee CricZee Cric
I am not as rich as Shah Rukh: Big B

Bollywood megastar Amitbah Bachchan says he couldn't bid for an Indian Premier League (IPL) team because he doesn't have "as much money as (Kolkata Knight Riders owner) Shah Rukh Khan".
"I don't have as much money as Shah Rukh. He has money and so he owns a team," Amitabh said poula TV channel.
Amitabh sent a congratulatory SMS to skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni for his Padma Shri and didn't get a response. But he says he holds no grudge against the cricket star.
"He must have been busy, there's no need to make an issue out of this."
The sexagenarian otherwise makes for an avid viewer of the IPL and says he watches "almost all the matches

Slumdog Millionare Director "Danny Boyle" cast Aamir for next film

Rumours are rife that Oscar-winning director Danny Boyle has approached Bollywood superstar Aamir Khanfor his next venture.
Boyle first expressed a desire to work with Aamir during the premiere of Slumdog Millionaire in India and now he has approached him to work in his prospective film, reports said.
While Aamir was out of the country for a break with his kids, his chance return to Mumbai resulted in Boyle calling on the Lagaan actor to discuss a new project before hosting a party for his Slumdog team there.
The Trainspotting director was in Mumbai to help rescue Azharuddin Ismail Shaikh and Rubina Ali, the child stars of his movie Slumdog Millionaire, after authorities razed their shanties rendering them homeless.

Hrithik and Ash to play passionate lovers

Sajnay Leela Bhansali has dedicated his next film, Guzaarish to the living music legend, Lata Mangeshkar. He has also turned a full fledged composer with this film. Earlier he had done a track in Saawariya.
The movie has been in constant limelight for its lead cast, apart from Bhansali's musical skills. After romancing together in Dhoom 2 and Jodha Akbar, the smouldering hot pair of Hirthik and Aishwarya has been recast in Bhansali's film.
Commenting on the choice for the lead actors, Bhansali cited their beauty as the compelling reason.
Accordingh to reports, Hrithik and Aishwarya have been chosen to play the passionate lovers in Guzaarish because, for Bhansali, they epitomize the physical and spiritual beauty of Lataji's voice.
Now for some, the connection between the two stars and Lataji's voice may sound too farfetched, but, well, the physical beauty of the two stars and their on screen chemistry will always be a delight to watch.

A software to change sex!

The software has been developed by computer scientist Barry-John Theobald at the University of East Anglia in the UK and Iain Matthews, formerly at Carnegie Mellon University and now at Weta Digital in Wellington, New Zealand.
In fact, according to the scientists, the software can take a live video feed of a person talking and make them look and sound like somebody else could actually change that, the 'New Scientist' reported.
In their research, the scientists recorded video of volunteers performing 30 different facial expressions such as frowning, smiling and looking surprised. For each expression, the positions of key facial features, such as the eyes, nose and corners of the lips, were manually labelled.
That annotated footage was used to "train" software to recognise the face of each individual featured in the set.
Once trained on a person in this way, it can closely track every move of their face in video footage.
Those movements can then be transferred onto the face of another "known" person by calculating how the recipient's features need to change to take on each new expression.
Doing that and displaying the transformed face takes just 150 milliseconds, fast enough to allow a conversation over video link to continue in real time. To complete effect, a person's voice can be manipulated to match their new face.
Volunteers were asked to chat to one another in a video conference, but did not know if the face they saw was really that of the person they were talking with – or indeed if the other volunteer was seeing their own true face.
"The results suggest that our body language during conversation is more reactive to that of others than it is to their physical appearance. We've shown you can present a female as herself or as a male, and the other participant's behaviour doesn't change," Theobald said.
MS making human body a videogame controller
Microsofthas revealed that is has been secretly developing technology that lets people play videogames using natural body movements instead of handheld controllers.
The US software giant behind Xbox 360 videogame consoles revealed yesterday a prototype of a project codenamed "Natal," a system that combines cameras and voice and face recognition software to recognise people and their actions.
"The gamer in me went out of my mind when I got to be interactive with this," famed film director Steven Spielberg during a Microsoft press conference on the eve of a major E3 videogame industry show in Los Angeles.
"I got a feeling I was in a historic moment. What Microsoft is doing isn't re-inventing the wheel; this is about no wheel at all."
Natal lets people play driving games by simply moving hands as if turning a car steering wheel. In-game characters in boxing, skateboard, soccer and other sports titles mimic the body movements of real-world players.
The system scans faces and voices to determine who is playing, a demonstration showed.
Xbox 360 consoles equipped with Natal will be able to respond to spoken commands for actions such as playing movies or connecting online with friends for video chats.
An expected completion date for Natal was not disclosed, but Microsoft yesterday released a software kit for videogame makers interested in designing titles to take advantage of Natal's capabilities.

memory chips that could bend and twist

The day is not far when electronic memory chips would gain the ability to be bended and twisted, for engineers at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) have found a way to build a flexible memory component out of inexpensive, readily available materials.
Although the new device is not ready to debut in the market, but it holds promise not only because of its potential applications in medicine and other fields, but also because it has the characteristics of a memristor.
A memristor is a fundamentally new component for electronic circuits that industry scientists developed in 2008.
Scientists seek electronic components that can flex without breaking for many reasons-for example they could be worn on the skin to monitor heart rate or blood sugar
Although there exist some flexible components, the NIST researchers think that creating flexible memory is a technical barrier.
Thus, while hunting for a solution, the researchers took polymer sheets-the sort that transparencies for overhead projectors are made from-and experimented with depositing a thin film of titanium dioxide, an ingredient in sunscreen, on their surfaces.
They deposited the material by a sol gel process, which consists of spinning the material in liquid form and letting it set, like making gelatin.
They added electrical contacts and created a flexible memory switch that operates on less than 10 volts, maintains its memory when power is lost, and still functions after being flexed more than 4,000 times.
In fact, the switch's performance strongly resembles to that of a memristor-a component theorised in 1971 as a fourth fundamental circuit element (along with the capacitor, resistor and inductor).
A memristor is essentially a resistor that changes its resistance depending on the amount of current that is sent through it-and retains this resistance even after the power is turned off.
The NIST component demonstrates similar electrical behaviour like a memristor, and is also flexible.
And, thus, they can begin to explore the metrology that may be necessary to study the device's unique electrical behaviour.
"We wanted to make a flexible memory component that would advance the development and metrology of flexible electronics, while being economical enough for widespread use. Because the active component of our device can be fabricated from a liquid, there is the potential that in the future we can print the entire memory device as simply and inexpensively as we now print a slide on an overhead transparency," said NIST researcher Nadine Gergel-Hackett.
The findings of the study appear in an upcoming issue of IEEE Electron Device Letters.

Match against Pak was one of the best: Dhoni

Indian skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni has described India`s warm up clash against Pakistan ahead of T20 World Cup as one of the best matches they have played but reckons that doing an encore in future would be difficult.
"It was one of the best games but difficult to replicate it in future," said Dhoni after his side thrashed Pakistan by nine-wickets in front of a sold-out crowd at the Oval on Wednesday night.
Openers Rohit Sharma (80) and Gautam Gambhir (52) nearly knocked off the required 159 runs between them alone, a performance which would send shudders down the spine of other teams.
Dhoni was unwilling to confirm if Sharma has booked his place in the squad even if Sehwag recovers from his shoulder injury in coming days.
"It`s difficult to say, injuries being injuries...I don`t want to speculate about it now."
There was no ambiguity about Zaheer Khan though as Dhoni said the left-arm paceman is definitely out of the opening game against Bangladesh on Friday and could also be out of the final league game against Ireland on June 10.
"Zaheer has started bowling and signs are encouraging but we don`t want to take any risks," he explained. Outlining his reasons for promoting the Mumbai batsman to opener`s slot, Dhoni said Sharma was an automatic choice.
"I discussed with him in a practice session and he responded with enthusiasm. With Viru injured, he was the best option available. In the first game (against New Zealand), I thought I would open. But then Yuvi was unfit so I thought I would bat at number three and down the order.”
"Rohit seemed an appropriate talent who could really open the innings. He has the time when he plays the quickest of bowlers. That really helped me take the decision. Now he has made a big impact. Hopefully, he would get those runs throughout the tournament," he said.
Gangly pacer Ishant Sharma also did his bit by bowling a miserly spell and Dhoni is keen to use him in the middle overs.
"I still feel Ishant should bowl in the middle overs. May be an over to start or end with but he is best served in the middle overs.”
"It is a stage when batsmen are not looking to go after the bowlers and Ishant isn`t perforced to bowl his yorkers. In these conditions, he gets a bit of bounce. He hits the deck hard and middle overs are ideal for him," he said.
On a brilliant day for them, Dhoni still found fault with his team`s performance in the field.
"I don`t think we bowled well in the final two overs. We were not experimenting, we were trying to bowl yorkers and that`s not good," he said.

How Antarctica became the world’s biggest chunk of ice

Scientists have come up with the first detailed view of how the Antarctic ice sheet, the world’s biggest chunk of ice, was born.
According to a report in New Scientist, radar images suggest that Antarctica “grew” its ice cap in three stages, carving out the rock below in distinct ways as glaciers expanded, retracted, and flowed downstream.
The images were collected between 2004 and 2008 by researchers who drove huge trains of caterpillar tractors in tight lines over Dome A, a plateau of ice at the heart of Antarctica.
The tractors carried radars that pinged down through the ice and sent back profiles of the frozen rock landscape below.
Dome A, the highest point on the continent, is also one of the coldest places on Earth, with temperatures as low as -90 degrees Celsius.
Far beneath its frozen surface lie the Gamburtsev mountains, where glaciologists believe the Antarctic ice sheet was born.
Its distance to the ocean and high altitude would have made it the coolest spot on the continent 34 million years ago, when the ice began to grow.
Because Dome A is so remote and so cold, and because kilometers of ice separate the surface from the mountain tops, we know more about the surface of Mars than we do about the Gamburtsev.
Until recently, only a single radar flight some 30 years ago had probed the chain.
In the past few years, glaciologists have used planes and tractors to map out the iced mountains more fully. Earlier this year, the British Antarctic Survey revealed images of the mountains’ profile.
Now, a Chinese, Japanese and UK team has published results detailing the 900-square-kilometre area beneath Dome A.
By studying the images, the researchers have determined how the ice cap formed. First, some 34 million years ago, small mountain-top glaciers developed.
They froze and thawed with variations in Earth’s orbit, sometimes filling the range’s main valley and its tributaries, sometimes disappearing entirely.
These variations would have created distinct, high-altitude cirques, hanging valleys and deepened the main valley.
Isotope records from the deep ocean show that global temperatures dropped by up to 8 degrees C about 14 million years ago. This froze the ice to the rock, and it will have moved very little since then, preserving the landscape below.
According to Martin Siegert of the University of Edinburgh, UK, “It would have looked much like Patagonia today, with quite lush forests and small valley glaciers cutting into the alpine topography.”

Obama's speech: Palestinians, Israelis react differently

President Barack Obama's historic speech to the Muslim world evoked mixed response in the Middle- East with the Palestinian Authority describing it as a "good start" but right-wing Israelis slammed it and asked Tel Aviv's leadership to stay defiant amid calls to halt settlements.
In his speech aimed at healing rifts between the US and the Muslim world, Obama said: "Israelis must acknowledge that just as Israel's right to exist cannot be denied, neither can Palestine's."
The US president also issued a scathing criticism of Israel's settlement activities in the West Bank, saying "the US does not accept the legitimacy of continued Israeli settlements... It is time for these settlements to stop."
"His call for stopping settlement and for the establishment of a Palestinian state, and his reference to the suffering of Palestinians... is a clear message to Israel that a just peace is built on the foundations of a Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital," an aide to PA President Mahmoud Abbas said.
"President Obama's speech is a good start and an important step towards a new American policy," said Nabil Abu Rdeineh, who normally views Abbas' opinion to the public.
The Israeli right wings, however, condemned Obama's warming up to the Islamic world and asked the Jewish state's leadership to stay defiant on the issue of settlements.

Salman Khan gets rid of Katrina's belongings?
According to reports, Salman Khan recently got rid of all of Katrina's belongings from his house-Galaxy apartments where Katrina spent most of her time. Rumor has it that the couple has broken up. The reason their parting ways is because Salman is suspicious of Katrina having an affair with co-star, John Abraham. Apparently, when he checked Kat's phone bill his suspicion grew stronger as he found that both of them not only exchanged text messages but also spoke on the phone for long hours over the phone! Hmmm Sallu found the solution to the problem by breaking up with Kat but wonder what Bipasha has to say to her boyfriend's philandering

Shahrukh Khan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan rekindle their friendship
Some time back Shah Rukh Khan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan could not stand each other. Remember the public brawl between the two regarding the movie 'Chalte-Chalte' from which Ash was unceremoniously chucked out? But Ash was determined to take full advantage of Karan Johar's party to mend things between them. Apparently, Ash walked up to Shah Rukh at the party and tried to sort things out between them. Shah Rukh also seemed to bury the past and now Ash and Shah Rukh have become thick friends again!

Google launches Android in China
Google's Android mobile phone operating system is set to make its legal debut in China in June when China Mobile launches specially adapted handsets.
Taiwan-based handset manufacturer HTC said China Mobile would start selling a customised version of the HTC Magic, a handset based on Google's Android operating system, through its stores.
Analysts believe that a successful launch of a high-end handset for China Mobile subscribers could help remove hurdles to the entry of similar handsets such as Apple's iPhone into the country, the world's largest mobile market.
Apple has negotiated for months with China Unicom, China Mobile's smaller rival, to introduce the iPhone to China, but industry executives say regulators have sought to hold back an agreement until China Mobile has a device that will allow it to compete for 3G customers.
Android-based handsets and iPhones have long been available in China through "grey imports" - consumers can buy the G1, a phone custom-made for Deutsche Telekom by HTC, and the iPhone in any electronics retail chain.
But none of these sales are strictly legal as China bans WiFi handsets from its market unless they are also compatible with WAPI, a local wireless standard.
Also, consumers cannot get these handsets directly through their mobile operators, and the operators cannot subsidise them.
The Chinese government hopes to balance the big three mobile operators - China Mobile, China Unicom and China Telecom - against each other as they roll out 3G services following the issue of licences in January.
Although China Mobile dominates the market with its 483 million subscribers, it has lagged behind its competitors in picking up new users in recent months.
That is partly because it must use TD-SCDMA, a homegrown 3G technology, while China Unicom and China Telecom were awarded licences under WCDMA and CDMA2000, the standards used in European and US markets.

Australian police arrest 16 on child porn charges
Sixteen Australian men have been arrested on charges related to the distribution and possession of child pornography, police said Monday.
The men were arrested in five states over the past month and are believed to be part of a global child pornography network, said Neil Gaughan, Australian Federal Police high tech crime operations manager.
Each man is accused of downloading a sexually explicit video involving a young girl, Gaughan said. They did not know each other.
The operation was triggered by information received from police in the southwestern German state of Baden-Wuerttemberg in December, Gaughan said.

Baden-Wuerttemberg police announced in April that they had broken up an international child pornography ring involving alleged users in some 91 nations, including Australia, Brazil, Canada, New Zealand, Switzerland and the United States.
A total of 44 charges have been filed against the 16 Australians, Gaughan said. Possession of child pornography in Australia carries a potential sentence of 10 years in prison.

A teenage US-Indonesian model abused by malaysian prince
A teenage US-Indonesian model has returned to her family in Indonesia with tales of abuse, rape and torture at the hands of a Malaysian prince, after her dramatic escape with the help of Singapore police.
Manohara Odelia Pino, 17, told reporters she was treated like a sex slave after her marriage to Tengku Temenggong Mohammad Fakhry, the prince of Malaysia's Kelantan state, last year.
Her mother, Daisy Fajarina, said she would press charges against the 31-year-old prince, and blamed the Malaysian and Indonesian governments for trying to cover up the alleged abuse.
"The things I've been afraid of were revealed to be true. Manohara has suffered physical abuse. She's got several razor cuts on her chest," Fajarina said on Monday.
"No parent could be silent if their child was treated in such a barbaric way."
The Malaysian government had ignored her pleas for access to her daughter and had blocked her from entering the country, she said, while the Indonesian embassy had said that Manohara was fine with her new husband.
But the young woman — a well-known socialite in Jakarta — said her life at the royal palace involved a "daily routine" of rape, abuse, torture and occasional drug injections that made her vomit blood.
She said she was usually held under guard in her bedroom at the palace and was injected with tranquilisers whenever she complained.
"I am still traumatised by all that happened and it has left an impact on me," she told reporters in Jakarta on Sunday, after escaping the royal family during a trip to Singapore over the weekend.
"Sexual abuse and sexual harassment were like a daily routine for me, and he did that every time I did not want to have sexual intercourse," she was quoted as saying in The Jakarta Globe.
"I could never think a normal man could do such things," she said, adding: "Some parts of my body were cut by a razor."
The teenager whose fairy-tale wedding to a prince captured the imagination of Indonesia said she would be tortured if she did not appear to be happy when she attended social functions with Fakhry.
"Every time I went for events they forced me to smile and would torture me if I did not do what they said," she told the press conference.
She said she secretly called Singaporean police and pleaded for help after the royal family took her to the city state when they accompanied Fakhry's father, Sultan Ismail Petra Shah II, for medical treatment.
"The police told Fakhry that he would be held in jail if he did not let me go. No one could force me against my will in Singapore and I knew I had a chance to escape," she said.
The model once voted as being among Indonesia's "100 Precious Women" said she escaped her guards by pushing the Singapore hotel elevator's emergency button.
They were reluctant to chase her because they knew the scene would be captured on security cameras.
She blasted the Indonesian embassy in Malaysia, saying: "They made it worse by telling lies, saying that I was fine while I was suffering in Kelantan."
A spokesman for the Indonesian foreign ministry insisted the embassy had done everything it could to help Manohara and said the government would assist her if she wanted to file charges against her husband.
Malaysian Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin said the government would not investigate the claims.
"I think this is more of a personal matter. To date we have not been dragged into it, so we want to leave it as it is," he told reporters in Kuala Lumpur.
Malaysia's royal rulers used to enjoy immunity from criminal and civil charges but the privilege was removed in 1993.
There has been no comment from the Kelantan royal family.
Manohara's lawyer, Yuri Darmas, said she would have a medical examination to back up her allegations of abuse.
"We need one to two days to gather evidence before we file a lawsuit to the Malaysian police," he said, adding that he intended to pursue both criminal and civil lawsuits against the prince.
Manohara has already filed for divorce, her mother said.
